Kentucky Derby 2027 dates
The Derby is held on the first Saturday in May, and the FAQ confirms the 2027 date as May 1. It also says the race usually runs "in the early evening," while coverage and festivities begin much earlier. The Longines Kentucky Oaks, for 3-year-old fillies, is held each year the day before the Derby, so on Friday, April 30, 2027, with a $1.5 million purse. Most visitors who fly in attend one or both days, so decide early whether you need Friday as well.
Is the Kentucky Derby open to the public? Tickets and seating
Yes. Anyone can attend with a ticket, from general admission to reserved seats and private suites, all sold through the official seating pages. The FAQ says Churchill Downs sells most ticket options as two-day Oaks and Derby packages, and the site offers an inquiry form for help choosing a section. According to the FAQ, reserved-seat tickets on the frontside include food and both non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks. The same form covers tickets bought for a company as well as for personal use.
The event information page explains that all guests pass metal detectors and that "there is no re-entry" after leaving. For 2026 it set a one-bag limit of 12 by 6 by 12 inches during Derby Week; check the 2027 version before you pack.
Kentucky Derby dress code
Churchill Downs says its dress code "encourages guests to wear upscale attire," often hats for women and suits or dresses. Its what to wear guide notes that dress gets more formal "the higher up you go in the clubhouse" and that some areas set specific rules, so check yours. It also suggests packing comfortable shoes for a long day.
Kentucky Derby airport: private jets and Louisville options
Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) is listed by the FAA as 4 miles from Louisville, with a control tower open 24 hours and a longest runway of 11,887 feet. It is owned by the Louisville Regional Airport Authority. Bowman Field (LOU) is listed 5 miles southeast of the city, with a tower open from 07:00 to 22:00 and runways of 4,358 and 3,580 feet. The FAA record for Bowman notes prior permission for aircraft over 30,000 pounds gross weight, and the Airport Authority's board chair has called it one of the oldest continually operating airports in the country.
These records describe the airports in general, not Derby weekend, and we make no claim about parking, slots or procedures that week. Ask your provider which airport fits your aircraft, and how long the drive to Central Avenue takes after the evening race. Our Louisville private jet page lists providers in the area.
What to confirm with your provider
- Which airport, SDF or Bowman Field, suits your aircraft, and does Bowman's prior-permission rule apply to it?
- Has parking been confirmed for Oaks and Derby days, or will the aircraft reposition?
- How long should you allow for the transfer to Churchill Downs in the morning and after post time?
- Can a departure the same evening, after a 6:57 PM post time, be arranged at your chosen airport?
- How would leaving on Sunday, May 2, change the quote?
- What are the change and cancellation terms?
