German manufacturer of Stemme S12 motor gliders and light aircraft, based in Strausberg
Stemme GmbH is a German aircraft manufacturer based at Strausberg airfield (EDAY), east of Berlin. Dr Reiner Stemme founded it in Berlin in 1984, and it moved to Strausberg in 1993. It later became a joint-stock company, Stemme AG. Investor Olivier de Spoelberch became its main shareholder in 1998. In April 2023 the company changed its legal form back to a GmbH. Engineering and final assembly also take place at a site in Pasewalk.
Stemme's best-known products are self-launching touring motor gliders with a retractable nose propeller. The current S12 family has three models: the Twin Voyager S12, the Sky Cruiser S12-SW and the Grand Tourer S12-G. The Grand Tourer has a 25-metre wingspan and a Garmin glass cockpit. The company also lists the REMOS GX light aircraft for private owners and the ECARYS ES15 utility aircraft for professional operators.
The company reports more than 330 aircraft sold worldwide. Its first production model was type-certified in 1990, and the S6 received EASA type approval in 2008. Earlier models include the S10, which Stemme has built in Strausberg since the 1980s.
Stemme sells new aircraft through a network of distributors and service partners. In North America it sells through Stemme USA Inc. at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in West Columbia, South Carolina. Buyers deal with the factory or a regional distributor, not a broker. The business serves private pilots and soaring clubs rather than charter passengers.
