What Happens to Unused Jet Card Funds: Expiry, Rollover and Refund Clauses

A jet card or membership deposit is money paid before you fly, so whether jet card funds expire, and what happens to the part you never use, deserves as much attention as the hourly rate. On the four provider pages quoted below, read in October 2026, all four say their hours, funds or memberships do not expire, and one describes its deposits and unused funds as refundable "within a 60-day period."

  • Prepayment is sold in more than one unit, as hours or as a dollar deposit, and expiry means something different for each.
  • On two of the pages, the hours never expire but the hourly rate is fixed for 12 months, so how long the hours last and how long the rate holds are separate terms.
  • Only one of the four pages addresses refunds in the text we retrieved. For the others, the refund terms are a question for the contract.
  • Get expiry, rate and refund terms from the signed agreement, not the marketing page.

Hours cards and deposit programs

Prepayment comes in more than one form. Sentient's SJ25 card page presents a 25-hour jet card for Light jets, while the XO membership page lists a refundable minimum deposit for its membership tiers.

The unit changes what an expiry clause would take away. If a program's hours lapse, the loss is flight time. If a deposit program's terms end, three separate things may be at stake: the dollar balance, the rate it buys and any member benefits attached to it. Read each clause for which of those it covers.

Do jet card funds expire? What "never expire" covers

The Nicholas Air FAQ, as of October 2026, answers the question "How long is my rate guaranteed?" with: "Hours never expire and the hourly rate is guaranteed for 12 months." Sentient's SJ25 page lists "Fixed hourly rates locked-in for 12 months" alongside "Jet Card hours that never expire."

On both pages, the hours and the rate run on different clocks. Neither line says what rate applies to hours flown after the first 12 months, so ask the provider before you assume the balance keeps its original price. Our guide to what jet card rate lock and fuel surcharge clauses cover explains the rate side in more detail.

The Magellan Jets FAQ uses different wording: "your funds never expire and are never co-mingled." The second half of that phrase is about something other than expiry. Our guide to evaluating a jet card program's financial safeguards before you prepay covers how money is held and what to ask if a provider changes hands or stops operating.

Rollover, leftover balances and the order funds are used

In the text we retrieved, none of the four pages quoted here describes a rollover mechanism. If a program you are considering does set a term, ask whether an expiring balance can be carried into a new purchase, on what terms, and which balance is drawn down first when you hold more than one.

A smaller question can matter just as much: the balance left over at the end. A few remaining hours or dollars may not cover a full trip in your aircraft category. Ask whether a leftover balance can be applied to a larger trip with the difference paid separately, used in a smaller aircraft, or returned.

If more than one person flies on the account, ask whether family members or colleagues can use the remaining balance. Our guide to how family and multi-user jet card accounts work covers the account side.

Refunds: what the published pages say

The XO membership page says, as of October 2026, that "XO Memberships are not only refundable and without blackout dates or expiration" and that "All deposits and unutilized funds are fully refundable within a 60-day period." The same passage adds: "All benefits are subject to agreement terms." The page does not say whether the 60 days is the window to request a refund or the time XO takes to pay one, or when the period starts, so ask.

In the page text we retrieved, the Nicholas Air, Magellan Jets and Sentient pages quoted above did not address refunds when we read them in October 2026. A missing refund term on a marketing page does not tell you the answer either way. It tells you to ask for the contract clause, including any fees deducted from a refund and how long payment takes. This guide is not legal or financial advice; read the agreement with your own adviser before you fund it.

Questions to ask before you sign

Published terms change, so ask for the current wording. You can compare jet card programs side by side on PJReviews.com first, then put these questions to each provider:

  1. Do the hours or funds expire, and is that stated in the contract with a date or term?
  2. Does the hourly rate stay fixed for as long as the balance lasts, and if not, what rate applies after the fixed period?
  3. Do any member benefits or fees have their own term, separate from the balance?
  4. If the balance has a term, can it be rolled into a new purchase, and which balance is used first?
  5. What happens to a leftover balance too small for a full trip?
  6. Is the deposit refundable, within what period, with what fees, and how is the refund paid?
  7. Can other named travelers use the balance?
  8. Can you send the contract clauses covering each of these before I fund the account?
