Indigenous-majority helicopter charter joint venture based in Norman Wells, NWT
Sahtu Helicopters is a rotary-wing company headquartered in Norman Wells, in the Sahtu region of the Northwest Territories, Canada. It was created in 2004 as a joint venture in which the Fort Norman Metis Nation Local #54 Land Corporation holds 51 percent and Great Slave Helicopters, a Yellowknife-based operator, is the minority owner.
The company owns an airside hangar and office complex in Norman Wells. Rather than listing a standalone fleet, it draws on Great Slave Helicopters' aircraft, pilots and maintenance engineers as needed. Great Slave describes its own fleet as single and twin engine turbine helicopters.
Its main work has been forest fire suppression and support for the territorial Department of Environment and Natural Resources. It also targets infrastructure planning, wildlife surveys, search and rescue, mineral exploration and oil and gas work in the Tulita District and along the Mackenzie Valley. Territorial procurement records show helicopter charter tenders around Norman Wells, including one Sahtu won as sole bidder in 2019-20.
This is a utility and industrial helicopter charter provider rather than a passenger or VIP service. Clients needing access to remote sites in the central Mackenzie Valley can contact the Norman Wells base or Great Slave Helicopters directly.
