Charter and air ambulance operator in Whitehorse, Yukon, with a seasonal Mayo base
Alkan Air is a Canadian charter airline headquartered in Whitehorse, Yukon. It was founded in 1977 by Barry Watson with Whitehorse businessmen Win and Joe Muff, and the company describes itself as having more than 45 years of northern flying in Yukon and the Northwest Territories. Mayo, Yukon, serves as a seasonal secondary base.
The company runs charter and air ambulance (medevac) flights seven days a week. Charter work focuses on wheel and floatplane flying across northern and western Canada and Alaska, which suits remote lodges, exploration camps and destinations without scheduled service. A short-lived scheduled Whitehorse to Watson Lake route ran from 2016 to 2018.
Alkan Air operates its own aircraft under its own certificate (ICAO code AKN). Wikipedia lists a fleet that includes Beechcraft King Air 300s, Cessna 208 Caravans, Dornier 228s, a DHC-2 Beaver and a DHC-3 Turbo Otter. Trade press reported in 2025 that three King Air 350s were added for medevac work, mostly owned by a Yukon First Nations leasing partnership.
For private flyers, the main options are turboprop charters within the territory and floatplane trips into backcountry lakes during the summer season.
