Fixed-wing charter and visitor flights from Halifax to Sable Island, Nova Scotia
Sable Aviation (legal name Sable Aviation 44 60 Inc.) is a Nova Scotia charter company that specialises in flights to Sable Island, about 300 km south-east of Halifax. It operates from the Gateway Facilities hangar at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. According to Wikipedia, operations under the current name began in June 2016. The same aircraft and pilot had served the island since 2006 under another local company.
The company flies a Britten-Norman BN-2A Islander, a short takeoff and landing aircraft. Oversize tyres let it land on the hard sand of the island's south beach, since the island has no paved runway. The website says visitor flights carry 6 to 8 seats. Parks Canada describes the aircraft as seating up to seven.
Its work has two parts. All year, it flies as needed for Sable Island Station, carrying supplies, staff, researchers and contractors. In season, it runs day trips for visitors to Sable Island National Park Reserve. Parks Canada says Sable Aviation is the only operator it licenses for fixed-wing visitor flights to the island.
Visitor flights run on selected dates from June to October and are booked by the seat. They are scheduled for Saturdays, with Sunday as the weather backup. Parks Canada controls flight scheduling to the island, and beach conditions or weather can delay or cancel trips. Each way takes roughly 75 to 120 minutes, and the operator's rates include Parks Canada fees.
