Turboprop and piston charter operator based in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories
Northwestern Air Lease, also known as Northwestern Air, is a Canadian air operator based at Fort Smith Airport in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. It started in 1965 as an aircraft leasing company, began flying in 1968 and added scheduled passenger service in 1984.
The airline flies its own aircraft. Wikipedia lists a fleet of about 14, mostly British Aerospace Jetstream turboprops along with Cessna 206s and single examples of the Cessna 172, 185 and 210 and a Piper PA-34 Seneca. These figures may be out of date, and flyers should confirm which aircraft are available today.
In December 2024 the company announced that it would end scheduled service on 16 January 2025, and Air Tindi was due to take over the routes. Since then the business has concentrated on charter work, both one-off ad hoc trips and longer-term contracts for corporate clients in Canada and the United States.
Government of the Northwest Territories contract records show the company has been hired for air charters over many years, including trips between Fort Smith, Yellowknife and Edmonton. It suits flyers who need a regional turboprop or piston aircraft in northern Canada rather than a business jet.
