Northern Canadian airline flying passenger and cargo charters from Yellowknife
Buffalo Airways is a family-run Canadian airline founded in 1970 by Joe McBryan, known as 'Buffalo Joe'. Its main base is Yellowknife Airport (CYZF) in the Northwest Territories, with offices in Hay River, a courier office in Edmonton and a heavy maintenance base in Red Deer, Alberta.
The company offers passenger charter and cargo and freight charter, along with scheduled passenger service, courier service, aerial firefighting, aerial application, fuel sales and parts and maintenance.
Its fleet is unusual for a current operator. The website lists Lockheed L-188 Electras, Curtiss C-46s, Douglas DC-3s and Beechcraft King Air 100s. Its cargo page gives payloads of about 33,000 lb for the Electra and 12,000 lb for the C-46.
A July 2025 report in Skies Magazine said the airline was rebuilding its cargo division with two Boeing 737s, including a 737-200.
The airline mainly serves northern Canada, including remote communities in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Flyers needing cargo or passenger charter rates are directed to contact the company.
