Horn Island charter operator for passengers and freight across Torres Strait and Cape York
Torres Strait Air is a locally owned air charter company based on Horn Island in the Torres Strait, Queensland, with a listed address in Parramatta Park, Cairns. The company was founded in 2013 by Daniel Takai, who serves as chief executive and is described by the company as the first Torres Strait Islander commercial pilot.
The company runs daily passenger and freight charter flights across the Torres Strait and Cape York Peninsula. Typical work it lists includes inter-island school and sports events, family and cultural gatherings, fly-in fly-out transfers and flights for hospital patients.
Torres Strait Air states that it operates 13 fixed-wing aircraft, all based on Horn Island and equipped for instrument flight. Independent fleet listings show Britten-Norman BN-2 Islanders, Cessna 206s and an Aero Commander 500S, and aviation press has reported orders for further Islanders and Tecnam P2012 Travellers.
Destinations served include Cairns, Weipa and island communities across the region, as well as Daru in Papua New Guinea. The fleet of small twin- and single-engine aircraft suits short island airstrips rather than long-range private jet travel.
