Charter, freight and mail-plane operator based in Darwin and Alice Springs, NT
Chartair is a general aviation operator in Australia's Northern Territory. Its roots go back to 1974 in Alice Springs, and the company now has offices at Darwin Airport and in Alice Springs, plus a base in Katherine. It forms part of the Aviation Logistics Group, which also includes Air Link Airlines, AirMed, Air Link Engineering and GroundMed.
Unlike a broker, Chartair flies its own aircraft. Its charter work includes government flights for health, education and regional council clients, FIFO crew changes for resource sites, VIP transport, and freight including pet transport. It also runs scheduled passenger flights between Darwin and Katherine.
For remote communities, Chartair flies mail-plane routes under the Australian Government's Remote Air Services Subsidy (RASS) scheme in the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Other listed activities include aerial survey, tourism flights, aircraft maintenance, ground handling and aircraft recovery.
The company does not publish a single current fleet figure on its homepage. Independent profiles give between 30 and more than 40 aircraft for Chartair alone, and the Aviation Logistics Group website cites over 70 aircraft and almost 300 staff group-wide. One aircraft type shown on the website is the Cessna Conquest turboprop.
Its website displays CASA, Flight Safety Foundation and Basic Aviation Risk Standard (BARS) logos. It is a practical option for travellers needing turboprop or piston charter into remote Top End and Central Australian airstrips.
