Paspaley Group aviation arm in Darwin: charter, FBO and Grumman Mallard operations
Paspaley Aviation is the aviation division of the Paspaley Group, the Darwin-based family company best known for pearling. The division grew out of Pearl Aviation, whose main base is Darwin International Airport. The group's interests also include jewellery, marine engineering, tourism and property.
According to the group, its aviation business provides private and business charter, flight inspection and calibration, fixed base operations, and logistics flying for the group's pearling operations. Its Darwin FBO, Pearl Flight Centre, lists VIP and general charter, medical evacuation flights and cargo handling, and the group says it has more than 46 years of experience.
The best-known aircraft are three Grumman G-73AT Turbo Mallard amphibians, built in 1947 and re-engined with Pratt & Whitney PT6 turboprops. They can land on runways or open water. They are based and maintained in Darwin, and support the Kimberley pearling fleet; one was under full restoration at the time of writing.
A joint venture, AeroPearl, based in Brisbane and run with Germany's Aerodata, handles navaid flight calibration, airborne survey and aerial photography across Asia and the Pacific.
