Cairns-based regional airline and charter operator for Far North Queensland
Hinterland Aviation is a regional airline headquartered at Cairns Airport in Far North Queensland, with further bases in Townsville and on Horn Island in the Torres Strait. It was established in 1984.
Alongside scheduled passenger flights, the company offers charter flights and freight services, and has guidance for passengers travelling with medical needs. It is an aircraft operator rather than a broker.
Its fleet is built mainly around single-engine Cessna 208 Caravan turboprops, with Cessna 408 SkyCourier twin turboprops reported to be on order. The company has also operated Beechcraft King Air B200s.
Published destinations include Cooktown, Coen, Kowanyama, Pormpuraaw, Aurukun and Lockhart River on Cape York, Palm Island from Townsville, and a number of Torres Strait communities such as Badu, Mabuiag, Saibai, Boigu and Murray islands. Charter customers in the region can use this network knowledge when planning flights to short or remote strips.
The airline has been owned by the Christoudias brothers since 2015, and 2025 press reports said the owners had put it up for sale, so ownership may change.
